The Animated Explainer Video for the Tsunami Early Warning System, developed for the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred), addresses one of Chile’s most pressing challenges: emergency management in the face of tsunamis. Chile, as one of the most seismically active countries in the world, faces constant risk due to its geographic location and extensive coastline near a subduction fault. This vulnerability became evident during the 2010 earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, which triggered a devastating tsunami and marked a turning point in the implementation of alert systems in the country.
The video aims to explain the update and expansion of the Tsunami Early Warning System, designed to complement existing systems such as the coastal sirens installed after 2010, the ABC System (ambulance, firefighter, and police sirens), and the Emergency Alert System (SAE), which sends text messages to people in risk areas. The piece highlights the integration of new satellite-managed antennas along the coast, enhancing the national alert capacity and providing a more efficient response to potential catastrophes.
The initial target audience for the video included investors and contractors interested in participating in the system’s implementation. However, its reach has extended beyond this scope, being used in interviews and televised reports to inform the public about this technological advancement.
My role in this project involved designing the graphic style, animation, and musicalization of the entire video. The client requested a warm and straightforward visual approach, blending 2D animated graphics with 3D scenes. For this purpose, I modeled the antennas in 3D, which became the focal point of the 3D segments. Additionally, I designed the project title, featuring an identifying icon. I also integrated original footage from drone shots of coastal cities and sign language components—elements provided by external production companies—ensuring their seamless adaptation and cohesion with the video narrative.
This project not only communicates the technological innovation behind the system but also underscores the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its population, emphasizing the importance of effective visual communication for projects with a national impact.
